Navarre’s public lots and boardwalks are the easy part. The hard part is the last 40 yards of dry quartz sand, especially if you are hauling a cooler, a low tent, and two kids who have already quit. A wagon is the right tool. The wrong wagon is a $70 folding cart with lawn-mower wheels.
What actually fails here
- Narrow plastic wheels. They cut in. You end up dragging the frame.
- Cheap folding joints packed with sand. The pin-and-slot fold that felt clever in the driveway seizes after one week of quartz.
- Low clearance. The undercarriage becomes a plow.
- No beach rule awareness. Santa Rosa County does not allow overnight gear on Navarre Beach. The wagon goes back to the car or the house. See camping rules.
What to look for, in order
- Tire volume. Wide balloon-style beach tires (often 10 inches or more, extra-wide) float. All-terrain wagon tires in the 4-inch-wide class are a compromise that work better on packed sand and boardwalks than in soft powder.
- Bed height and weight rating. A 150 lb rating is a family cooler plus shade plus wet towels. Read the real number, not the lifestyle photo.
- A fold you can do with sandy hands. Fewer tiny pins. Fabric beds beat splinter baskets.
- Wheel bearings that are not decorative. If the spec sheet is silent, assume they are decorative.
- Width through a beach crossover. Some dune walkovers are not truck-axle wide. Measure your boardwalk.
Three honest categories — not a fake “top 10”
1. Collapsible utility wagons (Mac Sports–style)
These dominate Amazon search results for a reason: they fold small, cost less, and work on the boardwalk and hard-pack. In soft Gulf powder they struggle unless the tires are the wider aftermarket type. Fine for a light load and a short carry. Frustrating as your only wagon if you park far from the water on a scoured, dry day.

2. Balloon-tire beach carts
This is the class that was invented for this sand: oversized plastic or pneumatic balloon tires, higher clearance, often a single telescoping handle. They do not pack down as small. They are the ones you see locals using because they have already killed a folding wagon. The linked VEVOR 12-inch balloon-wheel cart is an example of that class — not a lab test, and not a ranked #1.

3. Heavy family wagons (Wonderfold-style stroller wagons)
If the wagon is also a kid-hauler with push bars and canopies, you are buying a different machine. They are excellent on packed paths and miserable if you insist on rolling them across very soft dry sand to the swash. Many Gulf boardwalks and park paths are a better fit than the open beach. Check whether the park even wants them on a boardwalk — NPS Gulf Islands has its own rules on vehicles and some wheeled devices in the seashore.

Park and county constraints that change the purchase
On Navarre Beach, the wagon is day-use equipment. It does not stay on the sand after sunset. No glass in it. No pets on the beach, so the wagon is not a dog taxi down to the Gulf.
On Gulf Islands National Seashore, park in designated lots only. There is no beach driving. Oversized / RV parking is limited or absent at Opal Beach and Perdido Key. A wagon matters more when the lot is not next to the water. Pets are not allowed on seashore beaches.

A boring maintenance note
Rinse the sand out of the axles with a hose at the house, not at a dune. Quartz in a folding joint is how these things die in October. Let it dry open. Do not store it wet in a garage that already smells like last year’s cooler.
